A sweet sip of summer

The tang of fresh mint garnished over the surface of a fruity cocktail compliments the heat of the sun, a sip of sweet iced tea, the chime of ice clinking on a sweating glass alongside the sound of the ocean waves and the coquettish sip of the first Pina-colada of the day. Summer drinks offer a compliment to the beat of the blue sky, the warmth of the wind as it pushes ones hair back, the bronzed haze of a landscape through sunglasses.

Berry shake is simply a mixture of summer berries, blended together to create a thick, fruity concoction of vitamin C and healthy antioxidants which support the body flush of toxins and create a productive start to the summer mornings. The rise in shakes and smoothies provided by many coffee shops and individual stores, for example, Boost Smoothies, may provide the public with a better alternative to options such as caffeine in the morning. The switch from coffee to shakes has risen substantially, and the cheerful, bright summer months are an reasons for more people to switch to fruit shakes in the morning.

Since the dawn of time, iced tea has been a particular substitute to hot tea in the summer months. The tangy, cooling effects of that first sip of golden-brown, sweetened liquid provides refreshment and uplifted spirits. More often now, people have taken to making the beverage at home, laden with their own creative ingredients such as inventive berries, mangos and even oranges; garnished with mint and fennel seeds. The antioxidant effects of the tea combined with the added vitamin C provided by the fruits is undoubtedly a healthy option in the summer months. Likewise the flexibility of the flavours and ingredients allow for a range of tastes and textures which may be suited to different individuals.

As well as having many hydrating and cooling benefits, watermelon coolers contain lycopene which promotes cardiovascular and bone health. Aiding weight reduction and is filled with plenty of nutrients and vitamins to assist the body this summer. Garnishing the concoction with mint gives the cooler a more refreshing taste. Watermelon, being a unique choice for a drink- thin and easy to digest- is a beverage for any time of the day.

Mango Agua Fresca, the Mexican drink is essentially a reason to take sips of sweet mango pulp whilst the abundance of water within the drink hydrates the body during the hot summer period. The vitamins, potassium and copper in the mango also help with blood-flow around the body; the Fresca is a sweet, welcoming alternative to juice or sodas this summer.

As the rise in multi-culture becomes an ever increasing line travelling upwards, Moroccan mint tea, Maghrebi, supplies a refreshing, delicious and sweat-inducing summer drink; embracing the diversity of the Moroccan culture as well as allowing for a taste of this fresh, minty sweet beverage. Maghrebi mint tea is composed of Chinese gunpowder green tea, which is loaded in antioxidants and is key to eliminating free radicals. Composed of organic and raw ingredients, namely mint, which relieves the lungs and sinuses as well as aiding the digestive tract, this drink assuages tea enthusiasts whilst remaining uniquely its own special drink.

Summer is a reason to enjoy different cultures, lifestyles and change for the better. Perhaps it is time to introduce these healthier options into more of our diets during the sunny days and beyond.
