Since the inception of the Academy Award Ceremony, there have been a grand total of 3,048 Oscar statuette’s presented. Each year an Academy Award ceremony is held and its purpose is to honour the film releases of the previous year. Last year was the 88th Academy Award ceremony which aimed to present the Oscar statuette to films which demonstrated excellence in their field. Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a movie-related organisation comprising of 7,000+ men and woman working in cinema, the 88th Academy Award ceremony may have had several notable moments. There was Leonardo DiCaprio winning the first Oscar of his career, for “Best Actor in a Leading Role” for his performance in The Revenant, Brie Larson received an Oscar for “Best Actress in a Leading Role”, for her performance in Room, and Spotlight took home the Oscar for “Best Picture”. During the 88th Academy Award Ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented a total of 46 Oscar statuettes.

The breadth of categories the Academy Awards aims to celebrate seem to cover each facet of film-making; there are awards given for excellence in writing, original screenplay, music, original score and even make-up and hairstyling. This year, the Academy Award Ceremony returns with their 89th celebration, awarding Oscar statuettes for excellence across 24 categories. Following in the stead of the previous ceremonies, the 89th Academy Award Ceremony aims to honour the films from the previous year, this time being films released in 2016. For 2017’s award ceremony, the film nominees and winners are selected based on a voting process involving 6,687 individuals.

The 89th Academy Award Ceremony aims to be hosted at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Centre, where celebrities aim to arrive from all over to walk across the red carpet. The films which have been placed in the spotlight this year, once gain, aim to span a diverse spectrum of genres. The films from last year which the Academy have highlighted seem to indicate the films this award institute have deemed the most noteworthy. The list is extensive, however, these are the films which have been nominated for multiple Academy Awards this year:

With such a long list, this year seeing 336 films eligible for the Best Picture category, The 89th Academy Award Ceremony aims to bestow Oscar statuettes to only the finest films of 2016. This year’s ceremony is believed to be comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who aims to host the award ceremony for the first time. By covering a wide range of categories, the 89th Academy Award ceremony aims to celebrate the excellence of film, on and off screen. The 89th Academy Award ceremony aims to be broadcast in over 225 countries with an estimated seven hundred million people tuning in to view this annual ceremony from across the world.

The 89th Academy Award ceremony aims to be held on the 26th February 2017 and be televised live by the ABC Television Network.
