The face of Christmas

Sophie, the face of Christmas TV adverts playing Mary in the nativity.

By Yasmin Giannini aged 12 years

Christmas is almost here! When it comes to TV advertising the festive season sparked into action as soon as Halloween flickered out the lights in the pumpkins. It’s may be fair to say there has been a generous serving of tinsel topped ads so far, all of them seem to be mini movies with storylines depicting tales of Christmas day. One, which caught my attention, was a wonderful song-led piece of film.

The tale begins on a Christmas night invited into a cosy cottage in Ireland. Mum and daughter are busy making cookies and decorating the tree, whilst dad is out on the high seas finishing his shift at work in the fishing boat. The little girl is tucked up in bed, whilst mum waits at the window for her husband; he’s getting drenched and shivering on the frosty Christmas seas. It’s a great story and what makes this advert stand out from all the others on our screens is the Christmas music (which is one keep singing for the rest of the day every time I hear it) and the face of the little girl in the advert. I wanted to find out more, so tracked her down and spoke to her.

Sophie, the face of Christmas, who fills TV screens with the biggest smile in the Sarah McGuinness TV ads.

Introducing Sophie Townsend, the face of Christmas, who fills TV screens with the biggest smile in the Sarah McGuinness TV adverts for her debut album ‘Unbroken’.  We like it when other children become a success, so needed to know more:

What is your age and tell us a bit about yourself?

“I’m seven and from Cookstown in Northern Ireland. I like doing art, learning piano, colouring in and reading books. I have a little brother called Charlie and a dog called Roxie.”

How did you come to be chosen for the TV adverts?

“Sarah is my auntie and she asked mummy if I would like to give it a go. They thought I might be too shy to go on TV, however, I wanted to do it.”

In the advert, you’re in a nativity choir with other children, are they friends of yours?

“This was the first time I met the other kids before filming. We got to know each other and had lots of fun playing around Sarah’s house.”

You’re playing Mary in the nativity; have you ever played Mary in your real school nativity?  What other roles have you played at school?

“ This was the first time I played Mary. However, I’ve sang with my class at the school concert and I did a dance performance with the dance class one time in the local theatre and this was lots of fun.”

What was it like filming a TV advert?

“It was fun and the cameramen were funny. I loved it and wanted to do it more! It was hard work, yet, good fun.”

The TV advert was for Sarah McGuinness’ new album and Christmas song, did you have to learn the song by heart?

“I got away without having to learn it by heart. I listen to it a lot on my iPad and I like the song!”

Did you get to eat any of those yummy Golden Syrup cookies you were making in the video?

Golden Syrup.

Yes Sarah gave me two with hot chocolate! Thanks auntie Sarah!

Onto important matters, what is on your Santa list this year?

“Generation Doll, a sewing machine, toy slime, LOL surprise dolls and maybe a few surprises.”

If you have one wish this Christmas what is it?

“I’d wish for Snow on Christmas Day so we can build a snowman!”
