Love, peace on earth and goodwill to all men….wishes as old as the sands of time, and ones which might have been carried by each of the three wise men. Christmas cards resound with these classic messages, so much they seemed to have even become ingrained within culture, passing by words any more. However, LA band, The Longing, aims to remind of the importance of these wishes, whilst adding a new wish to the list for 2019: Hope.
The band’s founding member and lead vocalist, Laura Bradley, believes this is the perfect time in global history, where ‘hope’ plays such an important role in lives.
“I believe we’re all on the cusp of hope,” explains Laura, “Whereever in the world you may live, be it the Eastern or Western hemisphere, each one of us is currently living in hope for the future. Whether it’s the hope of reversing climate change, hope which love will overcome social situations across the world, hope our governments will ‘work it out’ somehow.
“This realisation came to me as I was skimming through traditional tracks to choose as our Christmas single. Jingle bell melodies about Santa seemed to have less of an impact on me this year. It was ‘Silent Night’ and ‘Oh Holy Night’ which both made an indelible impression on me. I’d heard them so many times before throughout my life, yet only this year did they really hit home. Only this year did I realise a ‘silent night’ would be something that everyone on this earth wants most. This ‘hope’ is what we’re all looking towards,”smiles Laura.
As a result, Laura Bradley’s LA symphonic metal band, The Longing decided to fuse the two classic festive ballads to create, their Christmas single, ‘Silent Holy Night’. Positively angelic vocals echo forth from lead singer, Laura Bradley, as her voice commands and controls the lyrical content of the Christmas classic that we all know so well, ‘Oh Holy Night’. From the first chord, the spirit of Christmas floods through the gentle melody of this classic reworking, entitled ‘Silent Holy Night’, as Laura masterfully guides us through the star-studded Christmas eve.
Laura Bradley continues, “As a musician, I look to the music for comfort and inspiration. When the opportunity came to record two holiday songs, I submerged myself straight into the heart of the lyrics. It seemed like they offered a global message of comfort. ‘Silent Holy Night’, The Longing’s combination of ‘O Holy Night’ and ‘Silent Night’ seem to me to speak to the universal heart of our current world condition, and the underlying need for hope and peace”.
Merry Christmas everyone and let’s keep hoping.
