This Thursday 22nd November, is Thanksgiving in the United States. This may just give the opportunity to ‘the two Davids’ from Chiswick bake shop Outsider Tart from putting together a slap-up Thanksgiving feast with lashings of all-American hospitality, in celebration of the big day.
Costing £50 a head (£70 with American wines) the holiday meal aims to include apple, cranberry and pecan salad, mac ‘n’ cheese and roast turkey.
“This will be the third time we’ve done a Thanksgiving dinner in London. We did one for Soho House last year and a more intimate one for 30-40 people the year before, which is how I like it,” says David Muniz (a.k.a. David M.) as he whips up another batch of chilli.
David M. (who wears the brown shirt) and David Lesniak (in the blue checked shirt) withhold from sticking to the baking rules. They’ve delved into family recipes handed down through generations, and then experimented with their own methods. It makes sense for them to add their own unique twist to an American tradition like Thanksgiving, which they’ll be serving ‘family style’ with all dishes made to share.
“It’s mostly just about a celebration of family, friendship and enjoying food. Back home it’s a two-day event. Everyone pitches in and for that evening everyone is one big family,” says David M.
Last year, Muniz and Lesniak, who moved to London from New York, published their first book, Baked in America.
If you fancy trying a large selection of their mouth-watering treats, from brownies and cookies to cupcakes and cheesecakes, pop down to the Royal Festival Hall for the Real Food Festival, where the boys hold court every Friday through Sunday. Or head to their store in Chiswick this Thursday and Saturday for Thanksgiving dinners, moreover, be sure to book ahead.
Anything diners may do to prepare for the event? David M. admonishes: “Definitely hold off from eating the day before!” Best wear trousers with a bit of room in them then.
