Each year around mid April, music lovers and festival goers from around the world come together for the Coachella Valley Music and Art Festival in California. Situated within the hot Colorado Desert, the music and arts festival transforms the vast area into an oasis of art installments and live performances from famous artists on stage. In addition to this, Coachella is now split into two weekends due to increased demand for tickets over the past few years. Coachella may have a diverse line-up ranging from up-and-coming bands to heavy metal rock bands. This year, artists such as Ellie Goulding, Guns n’ Roses, Calvin Harris and AC/DC among others are set to perform at the world-recognised festival.
Many of the art installations are of large-scale, and often double up as a way to find shade from the hot sun during the day. Many of the installations aim to challenge their audience to think about things in different ways. For example, Coachella-based artists Armando Lerma and Carlos Ramirez, who collaborate as The Date Farmers, have titled their installation ‘Sneaking Into the Show’. Their exhibitions and installations reflect the lives and traditions of the area’s Mexican farm worker community and the title suggests, the only way most may ever experience the Coachella festival. This installation in particular aims to show the audience a glimpse of life beyond the festival grounds.
Coachella may be known to attract many celebrities and well-known names in the media such as Vanessa Hudgens, Kate Moss and Paris Hilton, who may attend the festival almost every year. Celebrity spotting and Coachella fashion often covers the majority of media coverage on the festival and more recently large fashion brands have began creating clothing lines exclusively around the Coachella festival. For example, H&M recently brought out a new Coachella collection which features hippy boho inspired outfits including tribal boots, colourful jewellery and lots of denim.
Besides live performances, music and art installations, Coachella have many alternative activities to keep all entertained throughout the day. There are pilates and yoga classes available in the morning to early afternoon for those who might enjoy this kind of exercise. There is also a wellness centre for those who may need to take some time away from the crowds to relax and enjoy the spa. There are also various games festival goers may get involved in, such as water balloon tossing and snookball (a combination of football and snooker).
Coachella may also have a lot to offer in terms of food and drink. There are a variety of places to visit to eat or drink during the festival and each has its own unique selling point. Afters Ice Cream, offers customers the opportunity to create their own donut with a customised filling of ice cream. Restaurants on site such as Badmaash offer traditional Indian food with a twist, however there are food vendors which aim to offer vegetarian or vegan items, are on hand throughout the day until the early hours of the morning. Blue Bottle Coffee offers hundreds of different roasted coffee around the festival aiming to keep coffee addicts content. This year the farmer’s market returns offering local, pesticide free and organic produce such as Kombucha tea, freshly made Bloody Marys, fresh young coconuts and juices, farm fresh smoothies, baked goods and organic snacks. There are also an abundance of bars and pubs around the campsites which offer craft beers to sophisticated cocktails. Therefore, there may be something for all attendees to engage in and enjoy during their time at Coachella.
