US-style burgers and hot dogs shake up Covent Garden

By | Food & Drink

One month after the boom of two of America’s most famous restaurants opening branches in the UK, The Positive decided to check out one of them and try its adorable 100% natural Angus beef burgers. Shake Shack opened its first branch in the UK on July 5th in the centre of Covent Garden’s market area and we can confidently say that everything they offer is worth trying.

The menu offers a wide choice of burger and hot dog types, while for vegetarians there is an option of ‘Shroom Burger’ made with Portobello mushrooms. Whatever you choose, all the burgers come with a delicious soft bun, creating a nice base for Shake Shack to build the meat (or veggie) options upon. Interestingly, if customers want to try both vegetarian and meat options, the ‘Shack Stack’ is a combination of cheeseburger and ‘Shroom Burger topped with lettuce, tomato and special sauce, all in the one juicy package.

The burger option most appealing to us on our visit was the cheeseburger with all-natural, applewood smoked bacon, chopped cherry peppers and ‘ShackSauce’. All these ingredients created a nice combination and unique taste.

As well as these traditional burgers, customers can also choose from variety of 100% all-natural hot dogs. Relish, onion, pickle, tomatoes, short peppers, celery salt and mustard make up the ‘Shack-cago Dog’, a perfect mixture that creates a superb feeling in your mouth and one you will definitely want to try alongside the ShackMeister Sausage, a meaty dog that comes covered in cheddar sauce and deliciously crispy ale-marinated shallots.

Fries offered at the Shake Shack are free of any artificial trans fats and are cooked in soybean oil, which gives them a unique taste. What is more, they are hand-cut and the resulting taste is brilliant, far removed from the usual haphazard fries offered in most American restaurants. Customers can choose from normal or cheese fries, the latter being topped with a special blend of cheddar and American cheese sauce.

That might be enough to fill you, but if you would like to follow the meaty goodness with something sweet, Shake Shack offers frozen custard made from milk supplied by local farmers and which uses sugar instead of corn syrup. It also offers coffee made from certified Arabica Fair Trade beans.

Shack Shake in Covent Garden’s market is comprised of multiple sections. In the first, you are waiting and reading the menu and while there is almost always a long queue, it moves really fast due to the highly organized and plentiful staff. After queuing, customers make their way inside to order their food where they receive a special indicator that vibrates and lights up when their order is ready. There are then two seating areas, one is inside the building and the other outside but still under the market roof.

The atmosphere at Shake Shack is brilliant mainly due to the staff being very friendly and helpful. They are happy to aid customers however is needed and the friendship between them is visible on every corner. They look like one big family, something that also comes across in the food offered. Shake Shack is worth trying and you will be definitely happy to return again and again.
